I updated my Google Earth Tour of White Rock by following the multimedia principles below.
1.Dual Coding Theory: At every stop, I only included the required information with a corresponding image, which helps the learner focus.
2.Pre-Training Principle: At the beginning, I included an introduction, and also providing the learner with a map of the area that we will be exploring, and the specific route we will be focusing on.
3. Coherence Principle: I tried to only include pertinent information and images to reduce distractions and let the learner have fun on my tour.
4. Personalization principle: I presented the information in a conversational style, as learners learn better this way.
5. Cognitive Load Theory: I wanted the learners to have a low cognitive load, so my tour is arranged in a manner consisting of simple steps, thus the learners can focus better.
6. Spatial Contiguity Principle: The information and images are placed on the right corner of the screen and they don’t block the view, so learners can focus on the information corresponding to that location. I also included tips close to the images to enhance the experience.
7. Self-explanation Principle: I asked the learners questions so they can learn better by generating their own answers.
8. Signalling Principle: I highlighted the critical information by using numbers or bolding the information. This helps learners know what information to focus on.
9. Image Principle: I primarily avoided including images of people in the tour, as that may distract the learner.
10. Segmenting Principle: Each stop was separated with its own section with a corresponding number. Allowing learners to control their tour experience by moving between stops as they know the flow of the tour based on the numbers.
Before updating the tour, I used the SECTIONS model to evaluate how effectively the knowledge can be transferred to the learners. Then I defined, evaluated, applied such as by bolding text, which improved the tour while updating it. By employing these multimedia principles, and using the SECTIONS model, this version is a better tool for successfully transferring knowledge.
